on the left he’s reading “Dance Dance Dance,” by Haruki Murakami, Translated by Alfred Birnbaum. on the right he’s reading “Proofiness: How You’re Being Fooled by the Numbers,” by Charles Seife.

Just found this blog… only makes me want to move to NYC even more. A couple weeks ago I was driving to lunch with my boss and another coworker, who had just moved to LA from NYC. My coworker was saying how he loved the fact that his commute was an hour via subway… the same as his commute from Koreatown to Santa Monica. When I asked him why, he said that on the subway he could read, write, do a crossword puzzle, and keep his mind active. He said driving time is “deadtime” in that you can’t really do anything more but drive. That is what I hate about living in LA, and Southern California in general: driving is a waste of time. The last time I was in NY, I stayed with some relatives and took the train from Long Island to the city; 45 minutes and I was able to read, talk and play games on my cellphone. Right now I drive from The Valley to Santa Monica and I have to set my playlist before hand so that I don’t crash and die trying to change songs. I don’t care if they are smelly, crowded, and dirty. I’ll take a subway over the 405 traffic any day.
