I remember the days when asking for an “Old Fashion” was definitely old fashun.. I’m talking about early 90s when most of you tumblr’s were..
*can someone tell me when was the tipping point, was it Mad Men?
Though I may be young, I have noticed Old Fashioned’s popping up on more and more drinking menus. I swear every so often I will go to a bar and see a mustache’d man in skinny jeans, or thick-rimmed kid with a Hill-Side tie drinking one.
Mad Men, as well as certain trendy “gastropubs” have made “classic” cocktails hip. Here in LA, a certain gastropub *cough*FathersOffice*cough* has made quite a bit of money branding cocktails like the Manhattan and the Old Fashioned as cool and classic in an ironic-hipster sort of way. It is true, an Old Fashioned today is like a Cosmo back when Sex and the City came out. Thing is, most dudes who order one probably aren’t gonna like it. It’s not a Long Island Iced Tea, or an AMF… an Old Fashioned is not going to hide the taste of the bourbon so you can drink it faster. In fact, unlike modern cocktails, one is supposed to be able to tell that they’re still drinking alcohol. Somebody who can’t drink bourbon straight should probably order a whiskey and Coke, not an Old Fashioned. Somebody who just wants to get drunk should probably just order shots or an AMF.
But to each their own… If I’m out I’ll stick with IPA’s from California and if I’m home I have a nice bottle of Oban Distiller’s Edition waiting for some good company.
