You can take the kid out of punk rock, but you’ll never take punk rock out of the kid. I started skateboarding when I was in 4th grade, around the same time I started listening to punk. In those days it was listen to Pennywise, get psyched up, then go out and skate. I never really played video games. Never had a gaming console. Never played little league. Never played soccer. Never played league basketball. My parents didn’t mind because it was a cheaper hobby than other sports. They never had to pick me up from practice. They never had to buy me expensive equipment. Most of all, they never had to deal with annoying “sports parents” or soccer moms. Just set me loose and let me skate. Videos like this remind me of those days. Loud music, big tricks. Punk rock was always a part of it. While other kids (especially those who played organized sports) listened to hip-hop and Blink-182, we listened to punk. It really was what separated us from the other kids. We were on the fringe. We were different. Now, of course, its not that way; I listen to all sorts of music and I love playing sports. But I still love watching skateboarding… fuck, I still love skateboarding. This is my shit.
Ps, one of my favorite songs of all time. “Don’t Call Me Baby, Baby” - Kill Cheerleader
